The Nasarawa State House of Assembly is experiencing a possible leadership crisis regarding the Majority Leader post, which is presently occupied by Suleiman Yakubu Azara of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who represents the Awe South district.
The APC representative for the Keana seat, Adamu Omadefu, was replaced, and this is what is causing the uproar.
In November 2023, the Court of Appeal ruled that Omadefu's election to the 7th Assembly was inconclusive and mandated a rerun in five polling places within the Agaza ward of the constituency.
After the election was repeated by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, Omadefu was declared the winner and sworn in for a second term.
Though purportedly supported by a former Assembly Speaker, several APC stakeholders are requesting that Azara resign from his role as Majority Leader, arguing that the role was assigned to the Keana constituency.
The stakeholders, who have the backing of a few Assembly members, have vowed to take over as leaders of the Assembly if their demands are not fulfilled.
They charged current Speaker Danladi Jatau of Kokona West seat with breaking a deal that made him Speaker after Ibrahim Abdullahi Balarabe was fired for irregularities in the election.
