A High Court in Apo, Abuja, has remanded Senator Benson Konbowei, who is currently serving, to Kuje Correctional Center for suspected forgery of the NYSC exemption certificate.
On March 26, 2024, the Bayelsa Central Senator was arraigned before Justice Christopher Oba.
The Inspector General of Police charged Konbowei with fraudulently forging a document named "Certificate of Exemption" with number 000256454 and dated July 4, 2008, in the case designated CR/028/2023.
According to the police, the Senator violated the Penal Code Act (CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990) Sections 366, 156, and 158, and was subject to penalty under Section 364 of the same Act.
When the Senator was first charged earlier on Tuesday, he entered a not guilty plea to the allegations.
He was given permission to return home by the court, and his bail application hearing was rescheduled until Thursday, March 28, 2024.
The court gave the Senator N50 million in bail with two sureties after hearing arguments from the attorneys involved in the case.
According to Justice Oba, the sureties had to be landowners in the Federal Capital Territory with Certificates of Occupancy.
However, the senator was placed under detention in the Kuje Correctional Center by the judge until his bail requirements were fulfilled.
The hearing on the subject was postponed to June 24, 25, and 27.
