The Ogun State Government has declared that 70,000 people will gain free access to medical care for a year as part of its health insurance program.
In an interview with reporters on Saturday in Abeokuta, Dr. Afolabi Dosunmu, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency (OGSHIA), said this.
The health coverage
Dosunmu clarified that in addition to paying their premiums, registered patients would be eligible for the free surgical procedures that Governor Dapo Abiodun had declared available in January.
More than a thousand procedures have been carried out since the start of March, which is more than the typical amount of patients visiting medical institutions for screening.
He mentioned that some individuals were referred to another level of care for further intervention even though they couldn't have procedures right away.
Due to a variety of factors, including pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure or blood sugar, Dosunmu stressed the significance of patients retrieving their insurance cards, which provide free medical and surgical services for a year.
He expressed regret that many potential patients or those who were referred for surgeries had failed to do so, advising them to do so in order to ensure access to healthcare services.
"We now have issues with the insurance card that we enrolled them with; a lot of people are not coming back and we've started calling them, but they have not returned for those cards,"
he continued.
The state government has allocated N900 million to the state health insurance plan and the free surgical intervention program, with the ultimate goal of achieving universal health coverage and removing out-of-pocket costs for disadvantaged groups.
