On Friday, April 5, 2024, a Federal High Court in Lagos found controversial crossdresser Okuneye Idris, also known as Bobrisky, guilty of the naira misuse allegations brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC charged Bobrisky on six counts, the first four of which dealt with accused abuse of Naira, and the final two of which involved alleged money laundering. The EFCC prosecutor asked the court to dismiss counts five and six before ever seeing the accusations.
In response to the four counts of Naira abuse, Bobrisky entered a guilty plea. Nevertheless, he requested forgiveness, stating that he was ignorant of the legal restrictions on Naira abuse and promising to inform his followers on social media about it.
"I have more than five million followers on social media as an influencer. I would make a video and post it on my page to inform folks about money spraying. My Lord, I will not do it once more. I'm sorry for what I did, Lord. "This is my first offense," he declared.
Judge Abimbola Awogboro then ordered that he be detained in the custody of the EFCC until his sentence, which was set for April 9, 2024.
Recall that on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Bobrisky was taken into custody by the EFCC. Bobrisky was invited, as per the commission, because of a video that purportedly showed him showering fresh Naira notes during the March 24, 2024, FilmOne Circle Mall in Lekki, Lagos, during the premiere of Eniola Ajao's film "Ajakaju."
Meanwhile, Chidi Odinkalu, a former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and campaigner, was criticized by the EFCC for characterizing the commission's actions as an abuse of authority.
"The attention of the EFCC has been drawn to some reckless commentaries made by (Odinkalu) on the arrest of Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky) by the commission, describing it as evidence of idleness or an abuse of power," the EFCC said in part in a statement posted on its social media website.
The panel believes that Odinkalu's remarks are inappropriate for a former leader of a significant government organization.
Okuneye entered a guilty plea to charges of misuse of the Naira, which led to his detention and arraignment by the Commission.
As a Nigerian, Odinkalu is entitled to free speech, but this privilege must be used responsibly and with grace. The commission would not think twice about pursuing suitable legal action against such impolite people. remarks made by anybody against its legitimate mandate.
"Odinkalu is cautioned and counseled to express his wild views more responsibly in the future."
