Committee on minimum wage to meet again in mid-April

The Federal Government's 37-member tripartite committee on minimum wage, which was established, will meet again in the middle of April to carry out more discussions and talks over the new minimum wage, which President Bola Tinubu is anticipated to unveil on May 1, 2024.

In an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday, Hakeem Ambali, the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress and a member of the tripartite committee, disclosed this information.

Ambali mentioned that the reports from the zonal public hearings are still being compiled and examined by the committee members.

The committee was presented with the results of zonal public hearings that took place from March 27, 2024, to March 28, 2024, in each of the nation's six geopolitical zones.

The minimum wage will be made public is anticipated to mitigate the impact of Premium Motor Spirit's loss of subsidies.

Several zones made varying minimum wage suggestions at the public meetings.

The minimum wage requested by the North East, North West, North Central, and South South was N540,000, N560,000, N485,000, and N794,000, respectively. The South South demanded N850,000, while the South East demanded N540,000.

"We have been compiling and analysing zonal reports," Ambali stated when discussing the latest meeting's results.

He said, "Mid-April," when questioned about the scheduled date of the committee's upcoming meeting.

The 37-member panel was assembled by Tinubu on January 30, 2024, at the State House in Abuja's Council Chamber, through the intermediary of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The panel's mandate is to propose a new national minimum wage for the nation, with members drawn from the private sector, organized labor, and federal and state governments.

The existing N30,000 minimum salary expires at the end of March 2024, therefore Shettima encouraged members to "speedily" arrive to a decision and submit their findings early.

"It's critical that this submission be made on time must guarantee that a new minimum wage is established," Shettima stated.

The National Minimum Wage Act was amended by the House of Representatives in May 2017 to require a five-year review of workers' compensation.
