Emefiele is remanded to the EFCC by the court.

In order to make a decision regarding the bail request and the start of the trial, the court postponed the case until April 11th.

By Adelagun Oluwakemi  8 April 2024 Two minutes were spent reading.

Godwin Emefiele, the troubled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been placed under arrest and is under the supervision of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Monday, Mr. Emefiele appeared before Justice Rahman Oshodi at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja. He was charged with abusing his position and misappropriating N2.8 billion and $4.5 billion, respectively.

Henry Omoile, his co-defendant, was placed under remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Facility.

Both of them are being detained until their bail application is decided upon and their trial begins on April 11.

The previous bank governor was charged with Mr. Omoile's case. They entered not guilty pleas to the 26 counts that were brought against them.

Bail

A. Labi-Lawal, Mr. Emefiele's attorney, asked the court to give his client bail on self-recognition and generous terms while the matter was still pending in two bail petitions filed throughout the proceedings.

In his 31 affidavits, Mr. Labi-Lawal stated that the first defendant, Emiliele, had complied with the bail request, which had been approved by an Abuja court in a different but connected prosecution.

He noted the allegations were not capital offenses but rather offenses subject to bail.

"Even though the prosecuting authorities granted administrative bail to the first defendant, he is ready to appear in court and is requesting bail based on self-recognition."

"The first defendant is a former governor of the country's CBN, so the court should also take that into account, he said.

Mr. Labi-Lawal went on to say that his client had obediently shown up in front of Justice Muazu in Abuja to address the accusations made against him.

He stated that the first defendant posed little chance of escape.

Rotimi Oyedepo, the attorney for the EFCC, did not object to the defendant's attorney's request for bail.

On the other hand, Mr. Oyedepo implored the court to use its judgment carefully when giving the defendants bail.

In order to make a decision regarding the bail request and the start of the trial, the court postponed the case until April 11th.
