The Abuja Metro Rail Line has been fully renovated by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration (FCTA), which will soon cause residents who travel the route from the Central Area to the Airport to exhale with relief.
After conducting a final project inspection on Monday, Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, pronounced the Abuja light rail ready for commercial operations. Wike expressed satisfaction with the facilities on the ground.
He also expressed satisfaction in fulfilling President Bola Tinubu's directive, which was issued to him upon taking office, to make sure the Abuja Light Rail was completed before he celebrated his one-year anniversary in office.
Wike stated that the rail route from the Central Business District, through neighborhoods along Airport Road, to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, will be fully operational for commuters looking for an alternate mode of transportation.
You are able to view the facilities as we are prepared. Simply put, we found a few items that were left out of the design, but we think that some of these will be taken into account when things are fully operational.
In particular, I think air conditioning should be provided on a typical metro route where people wait to board trains. Additionally, I believed that some of the stations ought to have included elevators for the elderly and those who would not be able to stroll or ascend the stairs.
"Aside from that, we are pleased with the work that has been completed and we think that Nigerians, especially the people living in the Federal Capital Territory, will be happy," he stated.
The minister went on to say that while the facilities are what will make the passengers more comfortable, their absence won't affect operations.
"These are things they could handle when operations begin. The operation won't be stopped by it. How would residents of the various villages get to the train stations if there are no access roads to the station? Would the metro line really be necessary? he asked.
The minister discussed the expense of repair and stated that at least $15 million, or a minimum of N10 billion, has been allocated for the renovation.
