Following a tip, Hisbah employees in the Kura local government region of the State arrested Abdulkarim, a resident of Koguna Ward in the Makoda local government area of the State.
He had been going to congregational prayers every day and every Friday, posing as a Christian who wanted to convert to Islam, and begging money under the pretense of paying alms. Due to his activities, Ali Alkasim Kura, the Hisbah Commander in Kura LGA, ordered his arrest and sent him to the the Police in order to conduct additional research.
As a result, he was charged and made an appearance in court, where he admitted to the crime and stated that his debt was what drove him to take it. But he begged for forgiveness, promising never to engage in such dishonest behavior again.
After careful consideration, the court gave him a sentence of ten canings and issued a warning that the worst punishment would be meted out if the offence was committed again.
Abdulkarim begged for forgiveness from all Muslims after the court session, especially from those who had stood by him. He promised that he would never act in that way again. He apologized sincerely and said he would like to get advice from Islamic authorities in order to understand Islam better.
