Arsenal wins over Everton but loses the Premier League title

Even though Arsenal defeated Everton 2-1 on the last day of the season, they were just unable to secure their first Premier League title since 2004 as Manchester City won the championship for a record-breaking fourth year.

To win the title, the team captained by Mikel Arteta had to defeat Everton and hope that City lost to West Ham.

Idrissa Gueye's deflected free kick gave Everton the lead, which was unfortunate for Arsenal as Takehiro Tomiyasu equalized three minutes later.

Although Kai Havertz's late winner allowed Arsenal to fulfill their half of the contract, City's victory over West Ham ultimately resolved the situation.

Arsenal's faint hopes were virtually dashed at Etihad Stadium by Phil Foden's early double for City at Etihad Stadium all but eliminated Arsenal's last remaining dreams of winning a first title in twenty years.

Gueye's free kick took a massive deflection off Declan Rice's forehead and sailed into the net past the wrong-footed David Raya after Thomas Partey fouled Dwight McNeil 25 yards out.

Arsenal came back fast, and after Martin Odegaard's pull-back, Tomiyasu equalized with a beautiful low finish from the edge of the box.

Havertz and Smith, Emile Rowe both hit the woodwork in the second half, showing signs of visible exhaustion after a protracted, fruitless struggle for silverware.

But Arsenal did manage to find the winner, albeit under dubious circumstances.

Havertz's close-range tuck of the ball was suggested by the video assistance referee to suggested that the goal be disallowed for a handball by Gabriel Jesus during the build-up.

Referee Michael Oliver, however, accepted the goal after watching the video at the side of the field.

SWAN: Team Nigeria's appalling performance at the Paris Olympics is unacceptable.

The performance of Team Nigeria in the 2024 Olympic Games has been characterized as significantly below expectations by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). Through the Secretary-General of the Association, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin issued a statement stating that Nigeria's failure to return from the recently concluded Olympics with a medal was unacceptable. The Association blamed the country's enormous failure in Paris on administrative incompetence and ignorance, which became evident when the name of Favour Ofili, a highly regarded track and field athlete from Nigeria, was discovered to be missing from the list of competitors for the 100-meter event. After the Games, SWAN questioned why there were so many claims of medal hauls that administered by the sports authorities despite their full knowledge that nothing, not even the amount of preparation necessary to ensure a podium finish, was in place. Nigerians were led to believe that ev...
