In order to meet future demands, the Federal Government has announced that it will examine, restructure, and reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in great detail.
At the inaugural ceremony of the first-ever meeting between the administration of NYSC and the heads of Nigerian institutions that produce corps members, Minister of Youth Development Dr. Jamila Ibrahim made this statement. The event took place on Monday at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.
The Minister further declared that up to N10 million will be provided to over 5000 corps members for their business endeavors.
"Please allow me to provide us with a brief update on the upcoming NYSC reforms. With great pleasure, I declare that I will form a team to begin the evaluation and reorganization process, NYSC reorganization and improvements. Making skill development a central component of the program and evaluating participants with an entrepreneurial perspective will be the focus of the first change.
Within the next five years, we hope to see the NYSC programs become not just self-sustaining but also revenue-generating. We will institutionalize NYSC Ventures as an asset management and investment firm in order to accomplish this.
In addition, he declared, "I'm happy to announce that at least 5000 corps members will have their entrepreneurial ventures funded with up to N10 million passing out as part of the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund program for 2024."
Brigadier General Yushau' Ahmed, the Director-General of NYSC, welcomed the heads of corps of organizations that produce corps members, stated that the purpose of the gathering was to improve the recruitment of potential corps members.
According to Ahmed, the goal of the follow-up conference with heads of corps producing institutions in West African nations is to develop methods for removing weaknesses that have been found and guaranteeing a more seamless mobilization process.
"We believe that the direct involvement of chief executives of institutions will promote deeper appreciation of issues and ensure desired results," Ahmed continued. "We have identified some obstacles, including the delegation of roles to subordinates."
Additionally, he reiterated the NYSC's dedication to the safety and overall well-being of corps members, pleading with parents, the public, and corps producing schools to support initiatives to raise awareness among recent graduates about call-up for national duty.
Ahmed stated, "We implore you to supplement our efforts in educating recent graduates about the call-up for national service to avoid traveling at night when reporting to their states of deployment by using all available avenues."
In his speech, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike welcomed the attendees to Abuja and applauded the NYSC management for selecting the city as the conference location.
Wike, who was accompanied by the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat's Mandate Secretary
"NYSC has consistently symbolised our collective commitment to national development, unity, and integration," stated Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the administration. In order to overcome obstacles and improve best practices for our young graduates' involvement in national development initiatives, we must embrace creative solutions.
He encouraged the attendees to actively contribute to the success of the meeting and commended the NYSC for its efforts to improve operations through technology-driven initiatives.
