The Federal Ministry of Environment has reaffirmed its commitment to putting policies and programs in place with the goal of eliminating open defecation nationwide by 2025.

This was said by Ishaq Adekunle Saleko, the state minister of environment, yesterday in Abuja during a public hearing of the House of Representatives Committees on Environment, Water Resources, Works, Ecological Fund, and Emergency and Disaster Preparedness.

Saleko stated that the ministry has started a program called "Clean and Green," one of which is to guarantee sustainable complete sanitation, the adoption of green technology initiatives in Nigeria, and the eradication of open defecation in the country by 2025.

According to him, the National Environmental Sanitation Policy's instructions for managing sewage and excreta in The nation has advanced.

The ministry, he added, "established sanitation desks in the Ministries of Environment and FCT of the 36 States to monitor and ensure proper environmental sanitation at the community and household levels by conducting routine sanitary inspections of premises and raising public awareness of the dangers of open defecation and the significance of having access to a toilet in residential and public places."

"Perform recurring advocacy/sensitization campaigns and hygienic toilet inspections in Federal Government-owned facilities and Unity Schools across the country."started a series of planned efforts aimed at preventing and controlling open defecation countrywide, which have been implemented in the states of Kogi, Nasarawa, and Kano. This was done as part of the National Environment Sanitation Intervention/Response to Cholera Outbreak prevention and control in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

As the public hearing was announced Speaking in public, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen stated that the urgent need for more restrooms across the country cannot be disregarded.

According to him, access to safe and sanitary sanitation facilities is still a fundamental human right that millions of people do not enjoy.

Abbas stated that in order to address the flooding and gully erosion that have been reported from Anambra and the Enugu State Communities of Alur-uno and Aguata, an investigation should be conducted.

He claims that these natural disasters have a profound effect on many facets of society in addition to having terrible effects on the lives of citizens.

Beyond the terrible deaths caused by flooding and gully erosion, these natural disasters have a major negative influence on the stability of the local economies.

"Agricultural fields are damaged, businesses experience difficulties, and essential Damage to infrastructure results in significant financial losses and impedes economic growth, the speaker continued.
