The Kaduna Assembly's acceptance of a report by its ad hoc committee, which was tasked with looking at his government from May 2015 to May 2023, has been dismissed by former governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai.
In a statement released on Wednesday by his spokeswoman, Muyiwa Adekeye, the former governor asserted that he oversaw an eight-year administration that was trustworthy and capable.
The Kaduna Assembly on Wednesday got a report from the ad hoc committee entrusted with looking into the finances, loans, and contracts given out while former Governor Nasir El-Rufai was in office, according to an article published in The Nation on Wednesday.
The former governor and a number of Commissioners who worked for him were charged in the report.
The House asked the current Governor to investigate claims that N423 billion in public funds were embezzled during El-Rufai's administration Uba Sani should direct the security agencies to conduct a probe against the former governor and finance commissioners.
The chairman of the ad hoc committee, Deputy Speaker Henry Magaji Danjuma, presented the report to the assembly on Wednesday. He stated that most of the loans taken out during El-Rufai's administration were not used for the intended purpose, and that in certain instances, the proper procedures were not followed in obtaining the loans.
The committee suggested that security and anti-corruption organizations look into and prosecute El-Rufai and a few other indicted members of his cabinet for abusing their positions by awarding contracts without following the proper procedures, diverting public monies, and laundering money.
The text of the announcement says: "We have learned that the Kaduna The State House of Assembly has approved the ad hoc committee's report that examined the El-Rufai administration.
"We would respond forcefully as soon as we acquire a copy of the report, to which we have not yet received one. We reject the scandalous allegations being presented as the committee's report and uphold the integrity of the El-Rufai administration.
Malam Nasir El-Rufai is incredibly proud of the legacy he left behind in Kaduna State and his track record as a governor. Any malevolent attempt to utilize the authority of a state legislature for defamatory and unjustified smear campaigns cannot change this record of continuously high performance in public and private office.
"A large number of El-Rufai government officials showed up before the ad hoc committee due to their faith in the caliber of their work and the integrity with which they represented Kaduna State.
It is disheartening to witness a state legislature so blatantly disregard any concept of justice and decency. We treat the assertions being made in relation to the report with disdain.
Malam El-Rufai wants to reassure astute Nigerians that, with the help of a dedicated and patriotic team, he has served Kaduna State honorably and to the best of his abilities.
Throughout his tenure as governor, he conducted himself in accordance with all current legislation. This skewed investigation ought to be ignored as the politically driven hatchet job that it is.
