MINIMUM WAGE: Prolonged Labor Wait As FEC Withdraws Memo

The federal government declared that President Bola Tinubu will have additional discussions before making a decision, delaying the desire of Nigerian workers for a new national minimum wage to help them deal with the current cost of living problem.

Following President Tinubu's preside over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, Mohammed Idris, the minister of information, revealed this to reporters from the State House.
Idris disclosed that although the president had received a report from the tripartite committee tasked with finding a solution, more talks are necessary due to the issue's intricacy.

The minister clarified that the issue had been discussed by the Federal Executive Committee However, in the end, they chose to rescind the decision immediately. "So I want to state that on the new national minimum wage, Mr. President is going to consult further so that he can have an informed position because the new national minimum wage, like I said, is not just an issue of the federal government:

it affects the state governments, the local governments, and the organized private sector, and that is why it is called national minimum wage. It's not just an affair of the federal government," the union stated.

Leadership remembers that on June 3, 2024, laborers went on a two-day strike in protest of the tripartite committee's inability to reach a consensus on a new minimum wage and demanded the cancellation of the increase in electricity tariff It has been decided upon to introduce a new minimum wage, which will begin in May 2024.

August Will See The Release Of The New Minimum Wage - TUC
In the meantime, organized labor made a hint yesterday that early August 2024 is when the new national minimum wage is anticipated to be finalized.

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) president, Comrade Festus Osifo, dropped a hint when Kogi State government representatives, led by Comrade Onuh Edoka, the special labor adviser to state governor Usman Ododo, visited the labor center in Abuja.
In light of the growing economic difficulties faced by Nigerian workers, the head of the TUC urged a swift update to the minimum wage.

SWAN: Team Nigeria's appalling performance at the Paris Olympics is unacceptable.

The performance of Team Nigeria in the 2024 Olympic Games has been characterized as significantly below expectations by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). Through the Secretary-General of the Association, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin issued a statement stating that Nigeria's failure to return from the recently concluded Olympics with a medal was unacceptable. The Association blamed the country's enormous failure in Paris on administrative incompetence and ignorance, which became evident when the name of Favour Ofili, a highly regarded track and field athlete from Nigeria, was discovered to be missing from the list of competitors for the 100-meter event. After the Games, SWAN questioned why there were so many claims of medal hauls that administered by the sports authorities despite their full knowledge that nothing, not even the amount of preparation necessary to ensure a podium finish, was in place. Nigerians were led to believe that ev...
