The federal government has started implementing the free and discounted conversion of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles owned by road transport owners and e-hailing ride companies to compressed natural gas (CNG) in Abuja. This is less than twenty-four hours after the government signed agreements with five conversion companies in Abuja. The government also expressed confidence in reaching its target of converting one million vehicles to CNG fuel by 2027. The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) officials showed journalists around major conversion centers, including NIPCO and NASENI/Portland, among others, on Friday. They emphasized that the first phase's focus was primarily on commercial vehicles.
The government has identified 123 certified CNG conversion centers across the nation, with five of them signing agreements in Abuja. The conversion program is being financed through the government's palliative fund. The five companies are NIPCO Gas; Portland Gas Ltd; Fix It 45 ABG Oil and Gas; and the Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology (NITT). The government aims to convert 20,000 vehicles to CNG in the next three months, with plans to expand to 300,000 conversions annually. The conversion kits will be provided at a 50% discount for ride-hailing operators, while the kits and installation are free for transport union members..
In order to guarantee that the savings are transferred to customers, the government has pledged to keep an eye on the conversion centers.
More centers will open around the nation in the upcoming days, according to PCNGI's Commercial Operations Manager Omo Imoukhuede, who made this announcement to reporters on Friday while giving a tour of the CNG kit conversion workshops in Abuja.
the CNG campaign to make sure that adoption and knowledge are raised. We will be launching in Abuja and expanding to other states throughout the Federation. Hopefully and as you can see, work is ongoing, the task will be accomplished.”
He stated that the initial focus is on mass transit and commercial transport providers as they were important to the government’s aim of decreasing transportation cost.
Imoukhuede, claimed that the initiative's main goal was to fulfill President Bola Tinubu's directive on CNG penetration.
"At the moment, we are offering a 50% kit subsidy to commercial operators, and we also cover the cost of conversion and installation. We now regard that as a crucial strategic element in ensuring a major reduction in the issues now facing our country, particularly in the transportation system.
"We take great care to ensure that the initiative, adoption, and understanding of CNG are spread through all of the things we do to push it. Let's begin in Abuja.
We intend to visit additional states around the federation, and as you can see, our work is still ongoing. And ideally, together with under the guidance of Mr. President, we'll make sure that we do our assignment completely," he said.
He emphasized that the government was concentrating on commercial operators since they are essential to the expansion of Nigeria's transportation infrastructure.
"We are discussing food. We are discussing various forms of transportation around the nation as well as mechanical and electrical materials. We now want the private sector to focus on that as well," he stated.
Speaking at the NIPCO Plc CNG station, Sunday Ayoola, assistant manager of NIPCO Gas, gave reporters a tour of one of the facilities on Airport Road and mentioned that the conversion kit installation takes roughly five hours to finish.
Sunday claimed that CNG was more affordable than other fuels and safer as well under the guidance of Mr. President, we'll make sure that we do our assignment completely," he said.

Sunday claimed that CNG was more affordable than other fuels and safer as well "People are always worried about natural gas and gasoline and how volatile they are. In contrast to gasoline, natural gas is lighter and, once it escapes from the cylinder, it rises above the air, ensuring that there is no spool around. When there is a leak of gasoline, it creates a spool inside the vehicle and any slight source of ignition, the vehicle is ignited. This is not the case with natural gas and because of that basic property it is safer when compared to gasoline,” he said. He added that cars that run on CNG will also have the option of using gasoline if they so choose, emphasizing that when one fuel supply runs out, the vehicle will automatically switch to the other, even while moving that the upgrade makes it possible for the car to run smoothly on both gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG), however it does come at a cost of almost N4,000 for a single cubic meter of fuel.
He claimed that the car could travel more than 150 kilometers when its cylinders were full.
He reassured drivers that the CNG cylinders are secure, saying, "This storage is 7mm (millimeter) thick, so nothing will happen to it in the event of an impact." The cylinder's construction makes it resistant to both heat and impact.
People's concerns about natural gas, gasoline, and their volatility are constant. Unlike gasoline, natural gas is lighter and rises above the surrounding air after it exits the cylinder, ensuring that no spool remains. When there's a leakage of gasoline causes the car to spool, and if there is even a tiny spark, the car will ignite. This is not the case with natural gas, and as a result of that fundamental feature, it is safer than gasoline, the speaker said.
E-hailing taxis are also included in the conversion plan, according to Lara Obileye, manager of PCNGI's Sales, Business Development, and Strategy at the Portland Gas conversion center, but they will only contribute a small portion of the necessary funds.
"The transport associations have 100% conversion and kit cost free, while the e-hailing taxis are expected to pay a small portion of the conversion costs. We launched the e-hailing program today, and it's operating to sprint throughout the union.
"We will continue to roll out, beginning today with Abuja and Lagos. As we visit each state, the announcements will be made on a regular basis. Within the first 12 months, we want to convert over a million cars nationwide," Obileye said.
I found out that the conversion will range from N700,000 to N1.8 million under the nationally acclaimed scheme, based on the make or capacity.
"The cost of conversion is a range for private individuals. Depending on the kind of car. There are three different engine sizes available: four, six, and eight cylinders.
