The federal government will stop sending cash to 20 states for local governments in July.
This is in accordance with the Supreme Court's historic decision on Thursday regarding the claim for local government autonomy.
The Nigerian government was represented in this case by Lateef Fagbemi, Attorney General of the Federation.
The Federal Government was not allowed to give funds to local governments headed by appointed rather than elected people as a result of the court's decision.
The case's judge, Justice Emmanuel Agim, issued an order banning the payment of local government funding through state governments on the grounds that governors had abused this procedure.
He emphasized that local government councils have suffered as a result of governors' inappropriate retention and use of these monies.
Thus, beginning in July, local government monies will not be available to the 20 states without elected local government chairman unless they conduct elections.
Jigawa, Rivers, Imo, Kwara, Zamfara, Bauchi, Plateau, Abia, Enugu, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Yobe, Ondo, Osun, Delta, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, and Benue are the states that are impacted.
For July, the federal government gave N293.82 billion to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on behalf of the nation's 774 local government units.
