Rev. Jolly Nyame, a former governor of Taraba State, has issued a warning to the state's populace, especially the Yoro community, not to take part in the planned August 1 countrywide protest against the hardships facing the nation.
A number of resentful Nigerians have resorted to social media, organizing a national demonstration to call attention to the current economic climate that has worsened living circumstances and caused suffering in the nation.
Speaking at a global press conference on Sunday in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, Nyame stated that the demonstration is probably going to be a threat that might end up doing more harm than good for Nigeria.
Rather than starting a national demonstration, he advised returning the government ought to fund subsidies for agriculture at all levels in place of the recently eliminated gasoline subsidy.
"There is no denying that we are facing one of the most difficult challenges in the history of our nation. All the essentials for human survival, such as food, reasonable healthcare, and education for our kids, are conspicuously lacking. I know that a lot of families go days without eating or other basics.
This, incidentally, is the rationale behind this briefing. "A hungry man is an angry man," as the saying goes. We will undoubtedly be tempted by this unfortunate circumstance to behave regretfully and drastically. We are all aware of certain Nigerians' plan to consent to a national boycott in order to express their resentment towards the administration demonstration or stoppage. I have to admit that the government should bear some of the responsibility for our country's challenges due to specific policies and long-standing national issues.
But as Nigerians, we have a responsibility to reflect on our responses to this sad state of affairs and determine whether or not our varied backgrounds have made a constructive or negative contribution to it.
"I have to caution you against participating in the planned "national citizens protest" against the administration, which is being organized in the name of promoting good governance.
"Although it is everyone's right in Nigeria to voice grievances or protest against mismanagement, the tone used by the organizers is inflammatory, menacing, and obviously intended to topple a democratically elected government Taking action will only make matters worse and put thousands of lives at risk. A bad administration can already be overthrown constitutionally through the voting booth, not by terrorism or brigandage. As you are all aware, Yorro is a nation of hardworking, peaceful people who pursue numerous honorable careers, such as farming. Indeed, according to Nyame, we are among Nigeria's top growers of yams and other foods.
According to him, the community's members are not waiting around to indulge in any kind of vice in order to survive, saying, "We have no time to waste in a national protest that can only promote destruction."
