In response to its earlier decision to exclude public universities from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) platform, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has demanded that action be taken quickly.
The decision was reached some months ago, and the Council has instructed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to speed its implementation.
The action is expected to allay a long-standing complaint of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has continuously objected to the use of IPPIS for paying university staff salaries, citing particular quirks in the academic setting that the system is unable to account for.
Furthermore, the Council has approved the creation of a new National University of Technology and Science, Abuja.
Remember that on May 28, 2023, during the last days of his presidency, former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the new tertiary institution.
Designed to be the first of a planned network of Pan-African Institutes of Science and Technology, the new university promises to be a trailblazing establishment. Its main goal will be to educate and train scientists and technologists in Africa, with the hope of increasing the continent's proficiency in these two vital areas.
