US President Joe Biden made remarks on Wednesday that indicated he might withdraw from the race for reelection if it turned out that he had a "medical condition." Representative Adam Schiff, a crucial ally from California, asked Biden to "pass the torch." Biden, however, defended his choice to remain in office for a rematch with Republican Donald Trump in November and provided an explanation for why he had not passed the baton to a younger generation after one term.

Since a terrible debate against Trump almost three weeks ago, during which his appearance of fatigue and confusion raised questions about his age, Biden has been battling for his political life.

Democrats said on Wednesday that they intend to virtually nominate Joe Biden for president during the first week of August, in advance of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on August 19. This move comes amid growing pressure on Biden.

Although Ohio's governor signed a bill extending Biden's term, the Democratic National Committee expressed concern about more legal challenges.

The chiefs of the DNC's rules committee assured legislators in a letter seen by AFP that "none of this will be rushed." "Our goal is not to fast-track, regardless of reports to the contrary."

However, US media reports that a number of senators have opposed the virtual nomination idea and plan to sign a petition opposing it.

Though nearly two-thirds of Democratic voters want Biden to stand down, he maintains that they support him, according to a poll released on Wednesday by the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
