The Labour Chieftain, Joe Ajero, reportedly stated in a statement to CHANNELS TV that he promised to give workers a minimum wage of N250k during their meeting with President Bola Tinubu last week, but that the pump price of petroleum products will increase. In the meantime, it was determined through consultation with several other sectors that such price increases will cause the non-working classes to starve to death.
Relying upon the findings, the Labour unions have accepted the N70k for workers as minimum wage. Stating emphatically that the workers would rather sacrifice for Nigerians to get better living than collecting bumper pay at the expense of other citizens. He further explained that the Organised Labour agreed to ₦70,000 as the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers because the wage reviews in the country will no longer be every five years but once in three years.
The National Assembly is expected to receive a report on the new minimum by next week and subsequently pass it into law. The living wage proposal has seen several changes as regards debating and drawing conclusions, it is evident that Labour pursued good remunerations for workers but should not be detriment to the purchasing power of citizens, therefore, our acceptance of the N70k signed by Mr. President is accepted.
