In an announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu endorsed Nigeria's candidacy for reelection to the FIFA Council, the group that makes all of the organization's decisions.
Amaju Pinnick, the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for two terms and currently serving as Nigeria's council representative, was first elected to the FIFA Council in March 2021.
He's running for reelection.
The 37 members of the FIFA Council, who are appointed to four-year terms, are integral to FIFA's decision-making process.
Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu's Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, revealed in a statement on Tuesday night that Tinubu supports Nigeria's bid.
"President Bola Tinubu declares his unwavering backing for Nigeria's reelection campaign" into the FIFA Council. "In between FIFA Congresses, the FIFA Council serves as the organization's main decision-making body.
"The FIFA Congress elected 37 members to the Council, each with a four-year renewable term.
The third Nigerian chosen to the Council, following the late Oyo Orok Oyo and Dr. Amos Adamu, is Mr. Amaju Pinnick, the two-term President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
According to the statement, "Mr. Pinnick is running for re-election to the Council, and President Tinubu supports the bid for Nigeria to retain its seat in the Council."
