Leaders of the youth and religious communities in Nasarawa State's Karu local government area have urged the people organizing the planned August 1 nationwide demonstration to postpone the event.
They advised the organizers to instead focus on dialogue, arguing that protest would only make the situation worse and cause the nation to regress.
They issued the directive yesterday during a joint press conference held at the local government's headquarters.
Speaking on behalf of his followers, the youth leader Comrade Samuel Mami stated that Nigeria was not ready for a protest of the scale that the organizers of the August 1 event were preparing, citing past examples where such actions had led to confusion, instability, and as a result loss of property and life in a few African nations.
He said that the planned demonstration was misguided, particularly in light of the fact that the Tinubu administration had been attempting to resolve the issues mentioned as justifications for the action.
Comrade Mami continued, saying that rather than using protest as a catalyst for needless instability, young people should support the president and provide him with critical advice to assist him steer the nation toward progress and development.
Even as he vowed to back the president without reservation, he stated that young people in the Karu local government area and, consequently, Nasarawa State, would not follow such a course.
Dr. Joshua Dakulu, the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Karu local government area, made distinct observations. Alhaji Atiku Musa Gurku, the council's secretary and representative to Jama'atu Nasir Islam, also advised the demonstration organizers to choose discussion over protest in the best interests of the nation.
Instead of starting a demonstration, the religious leaders asked the teenagers to place the current problems in God's care through fervent prayer.
Among other recommendations, they asked the president to find a means to rein in the price of petroleum products and to implement price control measures to prevent arbitrary price spikes for necessities.
