Don Don, a community health nursing expert from the University of Ibadan's Department of Community Health Nursing, Dr. Dorothy Odetola, has bemoaned the severe lack of qualified healthcare workers in the nation and their widespread emigration.
During her guest lecture on "Advancing Frontiers in Nursing Education and Practice: Effects of Japa Syndrome on Sub-Saharan Africa" at the induction of the first 15 graduate nurses of McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Odetola revealed that more than 57,000 nurses left Nigeria in the five years between 2017 and 2022.
She continued by saying that although the original plan called for one nurse for every 60 or 80 patients, the reality now is one nurse for every 80 patients, with an exponential rise in workload
She said that in order to stop the increasing number of healthcare professionals leaving the country, the government at all levels had to act quickly and provide workable solutions.

Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, the Registrar of the Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMCN), conducted the oath.
Following the oath administration, Abubakar, in the person of Mrs. Kemi Awe, addressed the newly admitted Registered Nurses, reminding them of the standards society has for them as healthcare providers and pleading with them to always meet those standards.
In order for them to graduate from their internship with better nursing degrees, he also urged them to be open to learning from more experienced colleagues.
Professor, the institution's vice-chancellor Francis Igbasan, a senior colleague at work, counseled the recently hired nurses to utilize the people management and practical skills they had learned during their internship.
Additionally, he advised students to never forget that nursing is an art that calls for emotional intelligence, sensitivity, and effective communication. He asked them to look for mentors and role models who could support and guide them, to be patient with themselves as they learn and develop, and to be nice to themselves as they embark on a new path.
As nurses, you will be expected to provide care for patients during some of their most vulnerable periods. They will confide in you with their dreams, anxieties, and stories.
