Dr. Mukhtar Muhammad, the director of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), announced yesterday that since the fund's founding in 2019 till the present, the federal government has allocated N130.8 billion for the provision of healthcare services through it.
Dr. Muhammad made this announcement in Abuja, stating that the BHCDF distribution has allowed the federal government to finance more than 8,000 institutions and increase insurance coverage to 1.8 million people.
He added that N12.9 billion more has not yet been paid out for 2024.
The National Health Act of 2014 in Nigeria included the BHCPF as a fundamental element to guarantee that all Nigerians, especially the impoverished and vulnerable, have access to basic healthcare services.
The National Health Insurance Authority is the entity that distributes the fund (NHIA), Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), National Emergency Medical Treatment Committee (NEMTC), and National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
N14 billion was disbursed in 2019, N13 billion in 2020, N34 billion in 2021, N13 billion in 2022, N31 billion in 2023, and N26.8 billion has been disbursed thus far in 2024, according to a breakdown of the disbursements across the years.
