The method by which Mikel John Mikel Obi funded the U-23 Eagles team's airfare to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil has been made public.
The team's handler at the time, Samson Siasia, named Mikel as one of the three overage players on the roster.
In addition to receiving the captain's armband, the former Chelsea midfielder guided the club to third place in the men's football competition.
However, the former star of Norway's Lyn Oslo disclosed how the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) almost destroyed the team's hopes due to inept planning.
"We had to fly there when I represented my country in the Olympics in Brazil, and we had to wait from the morning till On his podcast, Mikel stated, "We're waiting for a plane to take us to Brazil at night."
"There was internal strife on who would foot the bill, therefore there was no plane to transport us to Brazil.
"The FA refused to pay the bill; the government, I believe, released the funds, but the FA, or whoever obtained the funds, would not relinquish them.
We thus spent the entire day at the airport, but there was no flight. That flight to Brazil was paid for by me. Furthermore, these are insignificant details.
