In spite of recent remarks made by President Bola Tinubu, the organizers of the "End Hunger" protest in Lagos have announced that they will resume their demonstration at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota,
The group expressed
disappointment in the fact that it took President Tinubu three days to address
the nation in a statement released on Sunday and signed by Hassan Taiwo,
Ayoyinka Oni, and Adegboyega Adeniji on behalf of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria
Organizing Committee.
The statement followed
the President’s broadcast earlier in the day, where Tinubu acknowledged the
protesters’ concerns and urged them to suspend their demonstrations in favor of
dialogue.
“We consider the President’s
decision to address the nation an important victory for our movement,” the
organizers said. On live broadcast, someone struck a protestor.
We believe that the
president cannot be both praising and criticizing at the same time. The three
stated, "The President cannot hold a knife to our throat and at the same
time extend an olive branch.
Then, on the fifth day
of protests, the organizers invited the general public and young people in
Nigeria to join them at Gani Fawehinmi Park on Monday at 7 a.m.
They called on the
Nigerian Bar Association, the Trade Union Congress, the Nigeria Labour
Congress, and the media to back them and not "stand idly by" while
they are suppressed.
Although the protests
were first reported by the Lagos State administration as peaceful, more recent
film has revealed altercations between demonstrators and criminals.
The coordinators
maintain that their protest is devoted to their demands for governance
reform and that it represents the deep-seated annoyance of common Nigerians.
