Bertran Unuoha, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police (CP), need to be fired right away, according to Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for governor of Kogi State, Murtala Ajaka.
He claimed that the state's growing security worries are the reason for his call.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja, Isaiah Davies Ijele, director of new media and spokesperson for the Muri/Sam Campaign Council, stated that the team no longer has faith in the CP's capacity to handle Kogi State's security issues.
He remarked, "We can no longer trust the CP to handle the alarming security situation in Kogi State."
"The lawlessness and impunity in Kogi are getting out of hand," Ijele continued. The state is turning becoming a haven for thieves, kidnappings and other vices, while the CP primarily takes action on political matters, doing nothing to address these situations.
"How did he know that the Supreme Court would deliver its judgement on Friday, August 16, 2024, when the apex court had not been constituted or composed yet?" he questioned the CP's assertion regarding the upcoming Supreme Court ruling in Kogi State.
Remarkably, the Supreme Court's ruling is a cause for concern in the state's security arena, as political gladiators and their supporters may use the celebration of a win or loss as a means of causing chaos that could incite serious hostility toward whichever side the ruling may favoritism or falter.
Ijele criticized the CP for putting too much emphasis on political matters at the expense of urgent security challenges. He asserted, "The CP is more focused on political issues than solving the security challenges the state is facing."
The campaign team is pushing for the removal of the CP and attention to Kogi State's security issues from President Bola Tinubu and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
They emphasized that in order to stop the issue from getting worse, action must be taken right away.
