*A PLEA FOR DELIVERANCE*

*Devotional Reading: Psalm 107:23-32*

*Background Scriptures: Psalm 22; Daniel 3*

*Lesson Scripture: Psalm 22:1-11*

*GOLDEN TEXT*
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? Psalm 22:1

*Objectives:* By the end of the lesson, class members should be able to:

I. Discuss indices that make Christians feel abandoned by God;

II. Explain some practical steps believers should take when they feel abandoned;

III. Understand the steps to take when seeking the help of God during challenging times.

*INTRODUCTION*
Have you ever felt abandoned by God due to life challenges and you cried in anguish and hopelessness as you present your request to Him? Was the experience a pleasant one? Life is full of challenges. Many ask questions about the existence of God and His power to save when there seems to be no immediate solution. A young boy asked his mother, "Why did God abandon Leah Sharibu in the hands of her captors despite her faith and decision not to deny Christ. Is she happy where she is?" The mother smiled and said to him, "God does not abandon His people, especially those who call on Him. Although Leah Sharibu is still with her abductors, it does not mean she has been abandoned by God. God is with her wherever she is and at God's appointed time, she will return home." In the same manner, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego faced the challenge to either bow down to a false god or be thrown into the fiery furnace. Despite the threat of King Nebuchadnezzar, they were resolute to obey God and serve Him only even if it will cause them their lives. They stood their ground never to bow down to the golden image created by the king (Daniel 3:17-18). They knew their God and trusted His power to save and deliver them.

The focal point of today's lesson is about King David, one of the great kings in Israel, and how he cried to God when he felt rejected by God as a result of his enemies' cruelty against him. He recounted God's past deeds towards the children of Israel, how they trusted Him and were delivered from their enemies. This experience made him to cry to God out of his misery for help, knowing full well that only God could deliver him from his enemies, He also pleaded for God's presence to be with him. This lesson is a reminder that Christians should cry to God in challenging times and be rest assured that God is with them in whatever situation they may be passing through. They should always hold on to God's promises, and the testimony of His past deeds should spur them to believe that God has not abandoned them. This will encourage them to trust His unchanging nature.

*THE LESSON EXPLAINED*

*A. Perceived Abandonment. Psalm 22:1-5*
People usually feel abandoned at the climax of their troubles, especially having tried all they could and their efforts seemed fruitless. At such times, they tend to depend on whom they believe. Psalm 22 is an expression of King David's feeling of abandonment by God from his cruel enemies. In verse 1a, he said, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me ...?" This same statement was uttered by Jesus Christ on the cross when He was about to die for the sins of the world (Mark 15:34). King David expected relief from his suffering hence, he cried day and night. Unfortunately, God appeared to be far away from him as he could not recognise His presence. He acknowledged God as the Holy One who the people of Israel give praises. He remembered how the people of Israel trusted the Lord and they were delivered of their troubles and so, they were never put to shame (vv. 3-5). King David could not understand why he should be abandoned because he knew quite well that God is able to deliver those who put their trust in Him.

Some Christians easily conclude that they have been forsaken by God when they experience delay in getting answers to their prayers. For such people, unanswered prayer by God is tantamount to abandonment like King David felt in this psalm even when they know that Christians are not immune to suffering. We should rest assured that God promised never to abandon His children (Psalm 94:14). The fact that God does not take pleasure in the agony of His people (Lamentations 3:33) should leave us with the choice to continue to pray and trust Him in spite of our feelings of abandonment. As we continue to pray and put our trust in Him, He will answer our prayers and deliver us from our predicament.

*DISCUSSION TIME*
1. Discuss some likely reasons why God I will not answer the prayers of His people.

2. Based on today's lesson, how can believers help their fellow brethren who are already feeling as if they have been abandoned by God because of their predicament?

*B. A Passionate Appeal for Help. Psalm 22:6-11*
As the psalmist continued in his appeal to God for deliverance, he described himself as a "wormscorned and ridiculed by everyone. People hurled insults at him and shook their heads in pity (vv. 6- 7), because they knew that he trusted in God therefore; they expected him to call on God for deliverance. Interestingly, he still acknowledged that it was God who sustained him from his conception to birth and that he had learned to trust God right from his infancy and so, he was not going to relent despite his predicament (vv. 9-10). He sensed trouble all around him and pleaded that the Lord should not be far from him. manifests

God's holy and trustworthy character was not only made manifest in the past, it also today. Scripture says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). This implies that God does not change. What He did in the past, He can do today, no matter how hopeless the situation may be. As children of God, we should depend on Him as our Defender and Sustainer when the enemies hurt and ridicule us because of our faith in God. We should not quiver but affirm that He is able to deliver us from all troubles.

*DISCUSSION TIME*
1. Why do some believers feel insecure to seek God's help in trying times?

2. What are the steps believers should take during challenging times.

*Fellowship and Ministry Building Activity*
Let every member of the class choose a partner to encourage each other in challenging times. They should also pray together from time to time.

*Take Home:* Write down three lessons you are taking home from today's lesson.

*Commitment:* Based on today's lesson, make a personal commitment to depend on God to fight your battles of life.
