The Senate is considering adding 30 justices to the Supreme Court.

In an effort to address the growing backlog of cases and boost the effectiveness of the highest court, the Nigerian Senate is debating bill that would expand the number of Supreme Court justices from the current 21 to 30. This was revealed by the bill's sponsor, Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West), at press conference held in Abuja on Friday to commemorate his two years in the 10th National Assembly. Even though 11 justices were recently appointed in 2023, fulfilling the constitutional quota for the first time in Nigerian history, he maintained that the current number of justices is insufficient. Despite having all 21 justices, the Supreme Court is overburdened. The It is concerning how many cases the court receives each day. Hearing dates as far in the future as 2027 and 2028 are being assigned to certain litigants, Izunaso said He claimed that in order to speed up the adjudication process, the proposed legislation would allow the apex court to create additional panels. When it comes to constitutional issues, the justices of the Supreme Court usually sit in panels of five or seven. At least five panels can be formed at once if there are thirty justices. In this manner, more cases can be handled more quickly," he stated. The senator is also calling for significant change in the kinds of cases that the Supreme Court considers, saying that the "judicial congestion caused by trivial matters" must stop. He questioned why cases like divorce battles, tenancy disputes, and land disputes were permitted to make it all the way to the nation's highest court. "Why should dispute over land in my village wind up in the Supreme Court?" he inquired. "A lot of these matters ought to begin in the Customary Court and conclude in the High Court." The context is better understood by those at those levels. The highest court ought to be saved for matters of national or constitutional significance, such as murder, terrorism, and major corruption.
