When President Bola Tinubu formally began the reconstruction of a significant road project in the Epe, Ijebu-Ode area on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos state, was not present.
Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno state, and Femi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos, were among the numerous high-ranking officials who attended the function.
The Cable reported that although Sanwo-Olu had a seat marked for him, he failed to show up. Instead, Hamzat, his deputy, took the seat behind the vacant chair.
During his remarks at the event, President Tinubu spoke to the deputy governor instead of the absent governor.
The president also instructed state governors to cease authorizing construction plans for illegal islands and developments that are constructed too near waterways and roads.
"Please, let's cooperate, governors. The president stated, "Don't grant planning approvals without working with the Ministry of Works and the federation surveyor-general on these roads."
"I'm happy to see Lagos State's deputy governor here. Please be aware that we take this very seriously and that we will withdraw all of the approvals that were granted due to setbacks. No more approving those illegally created unapproved islands.
Although Sanwo-Olu's absence has not been formally explained by the Lagos government, it may have something to do with rumored tensions between him and the president.
President Tinubu publicly disregarded Sanwo-Olu at another event last Saturday, which was the opening of a portion of the coastal highway connecting Lagos and Calabar.
A number of significant individuals participated in that event, including Bassey Otu (governor of Cross River), Douye Diri (governor of Bayelsa), Governor Zulum, and former Senate President Ahmed Lawan.
President Tinubu greeted everyone and shook hands as he moved through the line of officials. However, he completely ignored him when he arrived in Sanwo-Olu and went directly to greet Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo, who was standing beside him.
There are rumors that the two politicians are at odds because of what transpired with Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos assembly.
The majority of lawmakers removed Obasa from office in February after accusing him of financial misconduct. But after 49 days, he reportedly received his job back thanks to President Tinubu's intervention. He did, however, regain his job after 49 days, allegedly as a result of President Tinubu intervening on his behalf.
